Janamejaya was a powerful king and a descendant of the Kuru dynasty. Janamejaya's lineage can be traced back to Arjuna through a genealogical line. Arjuna had a son named Abhimanyu, who was married to Uttara, the daughter of King Virata. They had a son named Parikshit. Parikshit became the king of Hastinapura after the conclusion of the war. He was the father of Janamejaya, making Janamejaya a great-grandson of Arjuna. Janamejaya was eager to learn about his family lineage and past history. Janamejaya requested Vyasa to provide him with a detailed account of his ancestry and the events that transpired in the past, particularly focusing on the story of the Mahabharata.
The Mahabharata is an epic narrative that chronicles the great Kurukshetra War fought between two factions of a royal family, the Pandavas and the Kauravas. The epic not only describes the war itself but also delves into the lives, relationships, and teachings of various characters, including the legendary figure Krishna. Vyasa, who was considered both a sage and the author of the Mahabharata, obliged Janamejaya's request.
