Hello I’m Sophie. Welcome to the beginning of my sewing journey, come along with me through all the mistakes and seam ripping! And hopefully feel some solidarity that there are others bumbling their way through this hobby. Follow me on Instagram to see what I’m currently working on- http://Instagram.com/andsewitbegins_ This video is the start of a series constructing my favorite gown from Ever After (1998). This movie has been a favorite of mine since childhood. Danielles costumes from this movie seem mainly based on Italian gowns in the 1490’s. What I want to do with the project is create a gown that replicates this costume as much as possible, while trying to stay with a more historically accurate approach. But of course there really is no such thing as “Historical Accuracy”, especially for this period, as much of the fashion history is conjecture without extant garments. And you know I’m machine sewing parts of this, and not using period appropriate techniques. In this video I will creating the base layer of the dress which is an Italian Renaissance camicia, or shift. Most of my research came from THL Peryn Rose Whytehorse’s essay “A Woman’s Late 15th Century Italian Camicia”. This document is extremely helpful if you are looking to sew your own 1490’s shift, the link is below. *Disclaimer* I am very much an amateur seamstress and make many mistakes.
