After 15 years of anticipation we finally got our first look at Shrek 5…and people hate it! I never thought I’d see the day where a Shrek 5 teaser would have a devastating ratio of dislikes. I’m sure Universal didn’t expect it either, this is basically the worst case scenario for them since Shrek 5 was always supposed to be an easy billion at the box office.
Alas, the people have spoken and they aren’t vibing with any of this, from the premise of the teaser to the brand new redesigns of these iconic characters. But is this backlash warranted? Uh, kinda yeah. I’m sorry to everyone who loves these designs and I feel for the artists involved who are having their hard work dragged through the mud, but it’s clear that Dreamworks messed up here.
There have been a lot of arguments in defense of this teaser such as “It’s been 15 years, of course they had to update the models” and “The Last Wish redesigned some characters and you all loved that, don’t be a hypocrite” but they neglect the fact that when it comes to Shrek, these redesigns just aren’t all that great. At least most of them. (whispers) I kinda dig Shrek. There’s a reason why these aren’t resonating with people and it’s not just a case of “I don’t like change!”
So I wanna breakdown why this teaser fell flat and compare all the new designs to their old looks so we can pinpoint what went wrong here with constructive criticism.
