To celebrate his 75th Anniversary, I take a look at the history and evolution of CASPER THE FRIENDLY GHOST, the kindly, spirited creation of animators Seymour Reit and Joe Oriolo
Sold to Famous Studios as a one-off character. A surprise instant sensation, Casper was the first major character to emerge from the studio, becoming a star of his own cartoons and comic book series, and face of a lucrative merchandise line.
Over the years, Casper has seen varying levels of fame, appearing on-and-off again in numerous cartoon series, including one produced by Hanna-Barbera, and five feature-length films – one produced by Steven Spielberg.
I take a look at how Casper has evolved from story to screen, discussing the most important changes in his design and personality and in the stylistic and narrative structures of his productions prevalent across 75 years of media.
