The Sunreef 80 Eco Power, theoretically, has unlimited cruising range and it embraces solar panel technology in a way that no production boat builder has before. In this in-depth tour and review, Jack Haines, shows you around this extraordinary Sunreef power catamaran and explains how its fascinating drive and energy recuperation systems work. With 200 square metres of solar panels on board, including some glassed into the topsides of the hulls, and nearly a Megawatt of battery capacity on board, in peak conditions the 80 Eco Power has theoretical unlimited range. It doesn’t have traditional combustion engines but a pair of generators that work as range extenders to charge the batteries and/or run the motors when needed. True to form with Sunreef, the yacht is completely bespoke so customers can specify the exact layout, cololurscheme and materials of their choosing. The standard four-cabin arrangement is a popular choice but you can sacrifice a guest cabin to grant the owner’s cabin an entire hull. It’s no surprise on a boat that 80ft long and 40ft wide that the outdoor spaces are immense but having direct access to the foredeck hot tub from the saloon and the sheer size of the flybridge really do stand out. Yes, there’s a lot of very clever technology here but the 80 Sunreef Eco Power is also a fantastic boat to live on board.
