In this video Plumber-Tom explains and demonstrates how an expansion tank should be installed with proper support.
For many years expansion tanks have been installed and supported by the piping that they are connected to. In the International Plumbing Code, section 308.10 it states that “thermal expansion tanks shall not be supported by the piping that connects to such tanks.” And both the International Plumbing Code (IPC) and the Uniform Plumbing Code (UPC) require that expansion tanks be installed according to manufacturer’s installation instructions.
Upon examination of the installation instructions for a typical expansion tank, the tank can be installed in practically any orientation - vertically or horizontally, as long as it is on the cold side of the water heater connection. Manufacturers require that the tanks be properly supported.
In this video, Plumber-Tom illustrates installations that are incorrect with tanks being supported by the pipe, and demonstrates an installation using a Holdrite expansion tank mounting kit.
