Our First Night Stay Over was at Red Sands Country Lodge which has always been a favorite of ours. For accommodation you can choose from thatched rondawels, self catering chalets and campsites. The chalets and rondawels are very luxurious and a good option after a long day on the road. We mostly opt for the private ablution campsites, but there are also campsites with communal ablutions. The lodge’s dining experience is top notch and they have a full spec a la carte menu for dinners.
We arrived quite late at Tweerivieren, which meant that we only had time for a short game drive, but we do take advantage of every opportunity available to us. We did not see a lot, but being out there was worth it, and the next day would start with a bang to make up for this quiet drive.
We have never had problems with the picnic sites in the Kgalagadi. There are a lot of people going through here and it is kept clean most of the time, as long as every visitor does their part by cleaning after themselves
The gates only close at 19h30 in December, which meant that there will still be enough time to set up camp before heading out for your afternoon gamedrive
We have been to the Kgalagadi in most months of the year, and the summer months just has something special to it. The thick clouds make for stunning sunsets, and the smell of rain in the air makes for a completely different experience all together – even if it does not rain, because most nights, the clouds just disappear.
The Kgalagadi is renowned for its lion sightings and a lot of them. On this trip we actually did not find any lions in the first few days, apart from the day we drove to Nossob. This gave us the opportunity to slow down… and enjoy what the rest of the Kgalagadi has to offer
Spending time at a lion sighting is such a thrill and an incredible experience, and it’s the main reason we go to Nossob. But nature has its own way—sometimes it nudges us to slow down, sit by a waterhole, read a book, and soak in the tranquility of the Kgalagadi.
The area around Lijersdraai has always been a favorite of ours, and the facilities has also recently been upgraded, but we go to this area of the park to find cheetah.
The name Unions End Comes from its association as being the most Northern point of what was the union of South Africa. Today, Unions End still marks the meeting place of the borders between South Africa, Botswana and Namibia. This is also the point where the dry Nossob river enters South Africa from Namibia. The Border South Of Unions end that seperates the park and Namibia was completed in 1966. The border is fenced between Namibia and South Africa, but as Unions end lies within the transfrontier park, it is fenceless between South Africa and Botswana – This is as per the information board.
There is also a waterhole and well maintained picnic site nearby
The Nossob hide is one of the best hides we have ever visited. It has produced some amazing sightings for us in the past, including lion, cheetah, leopard, caracal, wildcats and brown hyena. This time around it was mostly barking geckos. They went about it through the night until the next morning
