Love travel and being inspired? Then you're sure to enjoy this relaxing tour of Morland House Gardens! Morland House is a former Tudor vicarage lived in by the Markham family since 1828. Morland is a village in the rolling hills of the Eden Valley in Cumbria, England. Morland, along with the hamlets of Town Head and Morland Moor, has a population of about 375. Morland is a scenic, rural area lying a few miles from the Lake District to the west, the Pennines to the east and the Yorkshire Dales to the south. The area is characterised by rolling hills and farmland. Morland is believed to have been settled for at least 1500 years, perhaps because of the Powdonnet Spring that rises by the side of the road leaving the village towards Cliburn. A Viking sword was found buried in the churchyard in the 19th century, which suggests a Norse influence in the area. By 630 AD Cumbria had been absorbed into the Anglo-Saxon kingdom; Morland's Church of St Lawrence is unique in Cumbria, as it has a Saxon tower. Morland is built on Morland Beck (a beck is a stream that flows through a ravine or narrow valley). Houses in the area are typically built of limestone from nearby quarries. Morland House is a Grade II listed former vicarage that dates back to the mid 16th century. Its four acres of magical gardens reflect the changing tastes of successive generations. The gardens are open to the public every day from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Morland House Gardens feature extensive lawns, colourful herbaceous borders and walled rose garden with views to the Pennines. Then comes the surprise. A flight of stone steps leads down to a lower garden laid out around Morland Beck fed by a high ‘force’ gushing water into a shady pool below. Crossing the beck by the wooden foot bridge, visitors reach a secret wonderland where nature runs riot – a Victorian rock garden created out of a former quarry complete with fountain, grotto and cliff top walk towering overhead. The circular walk returns via the stepping stones and Lion Steps to the croquet lawns. I visited at the end of August and had a lovely chat with the gardener, who told me she tends the garden four days a week, aided by two others who work each one day a week. Despite being from different continents, we both bemoaned a summer of intense and unremitting rain, which made keeping things tidy challenging for both of us. Nonetheless, I found the ambiance enchanting, with a delight around every corner. As the gardener and I parted company she called out "Have an apple!" I was happy to oblige and it was a delicious conclusion to a sweet couple of hours!
