After spending two nights in the brand new Lala Limpopo Sleepout Hide in Mashatu, we explore the reserve's two new exclusive-use safari homes, Kolokolo and Shalimpo.

We sleep at Kolokolo for only one night. It's a luxurious 5-star home that sleeps eight guests in four en suite rooms. A stunning wrap-around veranda overlooks a massive lawn and large garden right on the banks of the Limpopo River. Meals are typically served in the garden and there's a swimming pool overlooking the river as well.

On our two game drives from Kolokolo Safari Home we see elephants dust-bathing, a pride of lions with three tiny cubs and three leopards - one in the riverbed and two in trees. We also find a mother cheetah with four small cubs in the large open areas near camp.

From Kolokolo, we head to Shalimpo, a more rustic self-catering safari home located on a rocky outcrop near the confluence of the Shashe and Limpopo Rivers, after which it was named. Shalimpo sleeps eight guests in four rooms, to of which are en suite and two sharing a bathroom. It has a large farm-style kitchen, gas cooking facilities, free wifi, inside and outside lounges and dining tables, and a swimming pool.

On our first afternoon, our guide, Tips, takes us for a walk to Shalimpo Island where Botswana, South Africa and Zimbabwe come together. The view from on top of the small rocky outcrop is breath-taking and was definitely the highlight of our trip! This area is so unique, with livestock crossing into Mashatu from the neighbouring Zimbabwean communities to quench their thirst in the Limpopo River - the only reliable source of water during the late dry season.

We also see wildlife, like elephants, heading over from Mashatu into Zimbabwe, reminding us that having no fences around the reserve not only allows thirsty livestock in, but also gives hungry wildlife the chance to forage outside of the reserve. If you ask me, that's the Africa I'd love to see - one without fences!

From Shalimpo we do more game drives and see plenty of crocodiles, elephants, more lions and one of the same leopards from earlier posing beautifully in a tree.
