According to legend, Neelkanth Mahadev Temple derives its name from Lord Shiva. It is believed that this sacred site near Rishikesh is where Lord Shiva consumed the venom that emerged during the Samudra Manthan (the churning of the ocean by Gods and Demons to obtain Nectar). As a result, His throat turned blue, giving Him the name Neelkanth.

The trek from Rishikesh to Neelkanth Mahadev Temple spans 14 km and is surrounded by dense forests, offering stunning views and a serene experience for travelers. This holy temple is one of the top attractions in Rishikesh tourism and holds immense spiritual significance as the place where Lord Shiva saved the world by drinking the poison.

Another popular route is the 10 km Neelkanth trek starting from Badrinath. The trail to Charan Paduka (3 km) is picturesque, featuring the footprints of Lord Vishnu and the majestic Rishi Ganga Falls. From Charan Paduka to the Neelkanth Base Camp (6 km), the trek gets slightly challenging. The Neelkanth Peak is believed to be the spot where Lord Shiva meditated after drinking the poison. It is also said that He cursed the sage Narada for disturbing His meditation, resulting in the formation of this iconic peak.

This site is a perfect blend of mythology, adventure, and spirituality, making it a must-visit for anyone exploring the hidden gems of Rishikesh and seeking peace in the spiritual places of India.
