We visited Ojika island last time and this time we went to Ikeshima where the almost whole island is abandond.
- We visited the island in early October after having a PCR test, but since there are many elderly people living on the island and there are no medical facilities for corona treatment on the island, Nagasaki city has asked us to refrain from visiting from outside Nagasaki. When we visited the island, the islanders looked worried, so if you are interested, please try to visit when the islanders feel safe to welcome people.
【About Ikejima】
Ikejima is the island of Kyushu's last coal mine, which operated for 49 years from 1954 until 2001.
At its peak, 7,776 people lived on the island, but as the energy shift from coal to oil made it more difficult to run the mines, the population declined and now the whole island is almost abandoned.
The reason why Ikejima attracts the attention of people is that even as of September 2021, there are still 112 people living on the island, and even though the entire island is in ruins, you can still freely explore the island.
There are abandoned housing estates and buildings that have become weathered and swallowed up by nature. The life of the inhabitants is still going on quietly in a scene where time seems to have stopped.
The words "abandoned island" and "ghost town" may sound scary, but we want to share what we saw and felt.
