Dhankuta, everyone’s heard the name. It is one of the most recognized names when it comes to east Nepal. Yet, the majority of our knowledge of Dhankuta is limited to knowing the name. We’ve been to Dhankuta several times before but never actually entered the city. It was just a town on the road for us which is the case for many people visiting different parts of eastern Nepal.
But our visit this time was focused solely on Dhankuta. And this changed everything. A hilly town that’s been the central hub of eastern Nepal for centuries, Dhankuta’s tourism potential is still untapped. We collaborated with Community Homestay Network and ICIMOD on the initiative to bring Dhankuta onto the tourism Map of Nepal. With its diverse culture and communities, cool weather, clean streets, authentic original nepali houses, the Aathpahariya Community and their Wadangmet festival, beautiful homestays, the city’s accessibility and location and so many other factors make it a perfect destination for a great holiday spot. The climate resilient initiatives and sustainable responsible tourism Dhankuta is focusing on, is one more reason to visit Dhankuta. We are thankful to all our partner organizations, locals, Dhankuta Municipality and team CHN for this wonderful journey.
