Kaneohe is a town located on the eastern side of the island of Oahu in Hawaii, which is 10 miles northeast of the capital of Honolulu. Its name means "bamboo man" in the Hawaiian language which was based on an ancient Hawaiian story of a local woman who compared her husband's cruelty to the sharp edge of a cutting bamboo.
Kaneohe was home to the early rulers of the Hawaiian Kingdom before the 20th century and consisted of 30 royal fishponds. The area was originally an agricultural area the growing crops of taro and sweet potatoes. Today, Kaneohe has a population of 37,500, and has become a tourist destination outside of Honolulu.
Tropical Farms Macadamia Nuts has been in operation since 1987 and began as a roadside operation along the Kamehameha Highway. Today, the general store has been a popular tourist destination away from the hustle and bustle of Honolulu and Waikiki.
Byodo-In Temple is a non-denominational Buddhist temple located in the city of Kanoehe in Oahu, Hawaii. It is part of the Valley of the Temples Memorial Park and was dedicated to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the first Japanese immigrants to Hawaii in August in 1968. The temple is actually a replica of a 900 year old Buddhist temple at Uji in Kyoto Prefecture of Japan. The building is covered in gold and laquer to give its exterior a distinct look. It was built and completed in 1968, largely by concrete. This temple, however, is not a functioning Buddhist temple as it does not host a resident monastic community or active congregation.
Haleiwa Joe's Haiku Gardens is a restaurant and events planning venue founded and owned by Joe Lazar since 1998. Haleiwa Joe's Seafood Grill has two locations, one in Kaneohe and the other in Haleiwa. The Seafood Grill restaurant offers fantastic views Waiahole Forest Reserve and an excellent menu.
Kualoa Ranch is a 4,000 acre private nature reserve of three valleys - Ka'a'awa Valley, Kuaola Valley, and Hakipu'u Valley, and has been a popular location for Hollywood movie films and television shows. Originally bought by an American doctor for $1300 in 1850, the Kualoa Ranch's first structures was a sugar mill for its sugarcane plantation that lasted 20 years. Over 80 popular movies and television shows have been filmed at Kuaola Ranch over the years such as Jurassic Park, Jurassic World, 50 First Dates, Godzilla, Kong: Skull Island, the Jumanji movie series, Pearl Harbor, and Paradise. Television shows include Magnum P.I., The Amazing Race, Lost, and Hawaii Five-0.
