Plan was to go to Great barrier island and do some trolling for game fish, fishing and then some spear fishing. However, we changed course two thirds of the way there and decided to head to the Mokohinau islands. On arrival at the Moks around 9.30 am, we witnessed several schools of workups in the area so decided to drop anchor and fish. Caught 7 snapper on the rod and a big Kahawai that was used for live bait targeting kingfish.
Around 11am we decided to do more trolling and exploring around the islands. Witnessed quite a few boats in the area with many cruisers anchored up in the various coves and sheltered bays
12 midday, we found a hidden cove between 2 of the islands with a single mooring. We eased our way through the narrow gap and tied up to the single mooring. The area goes down to 2m during low tide so not great for bigger vessels.
1pm, We made some coffee latte and then suited up for some exploratory spear fishing. Lots of fish in the area but none of the ones we were targeting. Picked up some Kina, a boar fish and a butterfish.
3pm, started heading back with a bit of trolling that landed a massive jack mackerel by the tail.
4pm, gunned it all the way back to Omaha
