Hello and welcome to another underground adventure.
In this one we are looking for mines that are underneath Redruth town centre, some of which have not been accessed in over 100 years!
The two main mines here are Pednandrea Mine and Wheal Sparnon, both very old sets of workings that produced quantities of tin and copper as well as traces of cobalt and even gold.
In 1885 the mines were still visible on the surface but but 1906 maps show that both areas were now fully covered by housing, the only main feature remaining being the stone stack at Pednandrea mine.
The Sparnon set is the one most responsible for peoples back gardens disaparering from time to time in that area, and its not difficult to see why. Mine plans show an extensive network of adits and shafts covering quite a large area which is now fully developed, and many of the shafts would not have been capped properly and many more there were not even good records of where they actually were.
To access these mines we crawl up the drainage pipes in the bottom of the valley and walk for quite some distance before having to work out which branches of pipe underground may be the adits.
This was not obvious and took some time to complete but we managed some varying amounts of success.
Obviously do not try and repeat this trip. If anything goes wrong in there it would take hours for anyone to locate you, and in many places if there was a big downpour on the surface you may get trapped in there until the water level reduces.
