The Premetro is a 7.4-kilometer long (4.6 mi) light rail line that runs along the outskirts of Buenos Aires, originating at the world's southernmost metro station, Plaza de los Virreyes on Line E. It runs out to General Savio, with a short branch to Centro Cívico.
Opened in 1987, the Premetro is operated as part of Buenos Aires' urban transit network, and is commonly shown on the same map as the metro lines. Intended to be one line in a much larger system, the Premetro remains a relatively small stub on the outskirts of the city, serving some parks and public housing developments.
The rolling stock on the line consists of single unit high-floor cars, built by the Argentinian company Materfer, using electrical equipment supplied by Siemens. These are very interesting trams, and share many visual similarities with the Fiat-Materfer metro cars that can be seen on Line E. Enjoy!
