The Vedantic approach to dealing with difficult emotions is to look away from experience and access the inherent peace of our true nature. The Tantric approach is to look towards experience and to embrace our feelings or draw them close. But, what exactly does that mean?
Rupert says: ‘What that means is that we face the emotion until our resistance to it subsides. The emotion itself doesn’t compel us to resist it – it is we who are choosing to do that. Experience doesn’t compel us to suffer. We suffer because we resist it. We say “No, I don’t want this to happen” or “This shouldn’t be happening”. But we don’t need to do that.
‘Have you noticed that whenever we don’t resist our experience, we are happy? Because suffering is just resistance. If we resist it, we suffer. If we accept it, we are happy. So, why don’t we just choose to accept it? Why don’t we just choose to say yes to experience?’
