Hi everyone, Happy new year! So you've been handed a CPAP machine by your 'specialist' but no matter how hard you try you just can't manage to sleep with it! Don't worry, you're not alone and you're certainly not a failure! In fact studies show that one in three people who start CPAP therapy for sleep apnea quit and give up.

Just before you go looking for an alternative less effective therapy you should definitely consider trialling BiPAP therapy! Unlike traditional CPAP and AUTO CPAP machines, BiPAP machines can be programmed so the exhalation pressure is drastically reduced making it for easier and more comfortable to use.

Here's the thing about positive airway pressure.... It's only actually required during inhalation as apnea / hypopnea snoring only happens during inhalation.

Having minimal resistance during exhalation helps resolve many of the issues people have using traditional CPAP therapy. It reduces masks leaks, reduces unwanted side effects like aerophagia, mouth breathing, dry eyes, sore throat and a whole lot of other undesirable consequences of the therapy.

BiPAP machines can also deliver higher pressures (up to 25cmH20) so if you have very severe sleep apnea and require a very high pressure to control it then it could be a good option.

I believe that in the future BiPAP will become the mainstream treatment for sleep apnea.

BiPAP machines do tend to cost a fair bit more than CPAP machines but if you look around on the internet you can normally find some really good specials and discounts on older models, ex-rentals, used or refurbished or even open box.

Although you can get 'AUTO BiPAP' machines which will regulate the inhalation and exhalation pressure automatically (IPAP & EPAP). There are a few more settings that are normally set up by a clinician and it is a little more technical but that being said i will endeavour to do a clinical setup tutorial to show you how to do it yourself :-).

Thanks for watching and best wishes for 2021.

Nick
