So, the X-Men are one of Marvel’s most premier and iconic teams. Ever since they were created in 1963 by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, these characters and this world have captivated audiences with their rich history, their stories, and their themes of acceptance and equality. For years it was THE Marvel comic alongside Spider-Man, with stories and characters capable of filling an entire world of its own, like Cyclops, Wolverine, Storm, Gambit, Nightcrawler, and even Kitty Pryde.
And for all of their faults, the Fox X-Men movies were revolutionary, defining the modern era of superhero movies. Part of why I enjoyed *Deadpool and Wolverine* was that it was a love letter to that series that I grew up with and I can’t help but appreciate that.
But they still had their fair share of issues. The quality ranged from some of the best superhero movies of all time, worthy of awards and universal praise for years to come… to X-Men Origins: Wolverine. They were clearly ashamed of their source material, landmark characters didn’t get a spotlight, and not to mention the X-Men were sidelined in the comics and games because of the movie rights.
And so when Marvel Studios reacquired those rights in 2019, it opened the doors for those characters to be incorporated into their larger Cinematic Universe, where they could hopefully get the treatment they deserve and skyrocket them back into the mainstream.
There are some huge shoes to fill, and no way that everybody is going to be 100% happy with what they end up doing.
But I think the perfect X-Men movie for me is one that focuses on the themes and the ideas that make the X-Men who they are, and why they’ve held the test of time for so many years. An X-Men for a new era that showcases what makes these characters and this mythos so special, while also leaving the door open for things to come.
And so here’s my pitch for the X-Men in the MCU.
