Fashion Doesn't Matter (like it used to)

"Fashion is dead" seems to be thrown out every few years. Usually after a disappointing season on the runway. But are we really on a path to unisex jumpsuits with no personal style? To understand where we are potentially headed, we need to know how we got here. So join me in looking at the last few centuries of style to understand why people previously participated in Fashion.

Obviously none of this applies to basic clothing and the demands and needs we have of that. Yes, everything is designed and made by someone in the industry, but we're talking about the bigger societal trends. The choice to have that clothing signify more than function (which of course is still a signifier of class and more). But the CHOICE to participate in styles and trends is one that many people make every day and others actively choose to avoid. There has to be a reason why this century feels different from the last few.

There weren't massive anti-fashion trends in the 17th century, for example. Resistance to the norm only develops on a readable scale once the middle class appears and we have a more universal accessibility to that style. And that also means more people have the privileged situation of being able to actively refuse it. It's become far less important over the last few decades as counter-culture has spread far with the internet and personal style expression has become a much more common goal. As with all things, we've managed to commercialize resistance. But where will we go from here? Things are more than a little unstable and Fashion may play an entirely new role in the coming years.
