February can be a bit of a tricky month. It can be one of our coldest and wettest here in San Diego, and it still feels like winter across much of zones 9 and 10. The good news? We can START warm season crops AND we can WRAP UP the last round of our cool season crops. Before we get into all the goods, let's take a stroll through the yard. It's really cool to observe what's going on in your garden because you get a glimpse of what nature can do on its own. I had poured out a bunch of lettuce seeds in this area. With all of the recent rains, the seeds germinated, and now I have a thick lettuce patch! If you are choosing to do a last round or two of cool-season crops, I recommend going with crops that mature quickly. Brassicas - which take months to reach maturity - aren't a good bet this time of year. As the days get longer and temperatures rise, all of your cool-season crops are going to speed up to the end of their life cycle. That just doesn't give enough time for something like a big head of cabbage to develop. We're going to wrap up some of these winter veggies and start to make room for the next season! There are some general rules of thumb, but it can also be a lot to remember. That's why we've taken all of the guesswork out of knowing what to plant each month with our calendar. We recommend doing your last bit of cool season veggies, flowers, and herbs. Even though you can start lots of warm-season crops this month, we don't list all of those because you're going to be doing that inside in a controlled environment. I encourage you to use tools like this as a guide and find out what works best for you!
