I spend a day exploring two beautiful old towns in Lijiang by myself. Found cute cafes, ate wild Yunnan mushrooms, took a Tibetan painting class and had yummy beef BBQ for dinner. Lijiang, nestled in China’s southwestern Yunnan Province, is a captivating city known for its rich history, stunning natural landscapes, and diverse cultural heritage. It’s home to the Naxi people, whose ancient Dongba culture can be seen in the city’s architecture, art, and customs. Lijiang’s Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site, features narrow cobbled streets, flowing canals, and charming wooden houses that date back centuries. Lijiang also features Tibetan cultural influences due to its proximity to Tibetan regions in Yunnan. There are Tibetan Buddhist temples, prayer flags, and Thangka art. This is my first time trying out Thangka painting. With its diverse ecosystems in the surrounding mountains and forests, is a haven for mushroom enthusiasts. The region is known for its abundance of wild, edible mushrooms, particularly during the rainy season from June to September. These mushrooms play a significant role in the local cuisine, featured in hot pots, stir-fries, and soups.
