History of Feni District:
In 1984, the subdivision was upgraded and transformed into Feni district through administrative reorganization. The area of Feni district is 928.34 square kilometers. Feni district is named after Feni river. In 1876, when the new subdivision was formed, the police station was shifted to the subdivision headquarters and the new subdivision came to be known as Feni. In the past the Feni region was part of the ocean. The north east was the foothills of the Paharia region. Scholars opine that within the greater Noakhali region, the eastern Feni region is more ancient as a landmass. There are ruins of an ancient historical rock idol in Shilua village in Chagalnaya upzila of Feni. According to the literature, most of the Noakhali region except modern Feni was low marsh land in ancient times. At that time, the original name of Noakhali was Bhulua and Jugidia (located at the confluence of Feni River with the sea) was like an island.
