The Iowa Hawkeyes women's basketball team faced one of its toughest challenges of the 2024-25 NCAA season on February 2, when JuJu Watkins and the No. 4 ranked USC Trojans arrived at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. While the matchup promised high-level basketball, much of the attention surrounded Caitlin Clark, whose No. 22 jersey was being retired after the game.
Leading up to the contest, Hawkeyes head coach Jan Jensen emphasized the importance of focus. Speaking to the media on January 28, Jensen said, "What I've just told [my team] is, 'What a moment. You get to be in this moment, we get to celebrate one of the greatest Hawks ever.' But once the game goes up, all the pregame stories, then it just becomes us and them." She added, "I've just tried to really keep them in their lane, and I think they understand that. They know the task is tall on Sunday, but it's also a really fun opportunity."
On game day, the Hawkeyes stayed locked in and delivered a 76-69 upset over the Trojans. Lucy Olsen was the star of the night, finishing with 28 points and 3 steals. JuJu Watkins also had a standout performance with 27 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 steals, but fans declared Olsen the victor in their duel.
