In my quest to make strong wood glue joints without a lot of setup or expensive equipment, I came across Amana's finger joint bit #55392. It has stackable cutters that can be adjusted to join a wide range of stock from 7/16" to 1 3/8".
In this short 8 min video, I share my first-time experience of setting up the bit in my router table for 3/4" stock. The set-up wasn't difficult, and the joints provide me with the most glue surface ensuring strong joints. But most important to me, is that the joint keeps the face of the boards aligned along the entire length of the joint reducing post face planning and sanding.
As you will see, the bit also taught me the importance of using only flat square boards before making these joints and reminded me of the importance of having a jointer in my shop.
Now I can make wood panels as wide and long as needed for my projects.
