Those of us at the North Carolina Transportation Museum in Spencer, NC for National Train Day witnessed an historic event that many of us had been looking forward to our entire lives, myself included. The J 611 has always been a symbol of power and speed, and is undoubtedly one of the most famous steam locomotives in existence.
With a successful test fire in her firebox, the J moved under her own power for the first time in 20 years and 153 days. The unexpected decision to move the 611 left the hundred or so of us scrambling, but no matter how poorly organized any shots were, it really doesn't matter. He's one of the first videos you'll see of N&W 611 moving under steam this century. There's plenty of action from that classic whistle too. Enjoy, and be sure to share with your friends!
