Automatic transmission is a term that scares a lot of BMW enthusiasts, including myself. Nothing worse than seeing a sweet old BMW on marketplace only to find out it has an auto transmission. But that was the past..... what about the future? What about combining the wonderful vintage BMWs that we know and love with a futuristic automatic transmission? Introduce the ZF 8HP auto trans, quite possibly the best (auto) transmission to grace the automotive world in the last decade. Well some very smart people have found a way to mate a ZF 8hp transmission to engines such as the M50/S50 from the E34 525i and E36 M3. My buddy Justas has just completed this swap on his 450HP Turbo M52 E36 drift car and we are going to take it for a drive and see what it's all about. As an auto hater and vintage BMW lover, is this a match made in heaven? Or will it fall short like the auto transmissions that have come before?
