Jeremy and I recently visited Sihanoukville. Because it was our first visit, we didn’t have anything to compare it to. Of course we have read the news and have heard people talking about how much the place has changed, and we wanted to see it for ourselves. We stayed three days so that there would be time to have a good look around, and we thought you might be interested in what we found.
First and most obviously, the large number of unfinished buildings dominate the skyline, and our hotel was very close to a large number of these structures. Why are there hundreds of these? Well the developments were funded by Chinese investors who have since left and there are two main reasons for their departure:
1. The closure of online gambling, and
2. The massive downturn in Chinese tourism because of Covid.
Despite the overwhelming nature of the unfinished development and Chinese influence, it was still possible to find pockets of Cambodia as we know it. Come with us and see what you think!
