➡️ Well, this was a nice surprise. I had never heard the name Violent Femmes in my life until my older brother insisted I check out the song “Add It Up” here on the channel. I had zero requests for them until just a few weeks ago when I began analyzing punk rock songs. Boy, I did not know what to expect reading the term “folk punk” to describe this group, but this was an oddly nostalgic sound coupled with ferocious, heavy-handed bass riffs. I’m learning these guys were THE underground band of the 80s, but only if you were "in the know". The lyrics were such a trip (and especially quirky) against the happy, major-key progressions supporting them. I discuss Brian Ritchie’s BOLD bass presence, his method of “going rogue” from the main groove to assert some really off-kilter bass fills, his use of intense bass-chord accenting, and much more.
