On the morning of April 23rd, 2023, we chased the Nashville & Eastern Railroad from Lebanon, Tennessee on a rare run to Cookeville, a distance of approximately 60 miles, where the R.J. Corman-owned shortline served two customers that had recently come back online. The covered hoppers up front were loaded with corn starch for Royal Oak Enterprises, a charcoal manufacturer south of Monterey. The corn starch is used as a binding agent for charcoal briquettes. Since Royal Oak’s production facility isn’t rail-served, the starch is trans-loaded in Cookeville and taken by truck for delivery on-site. The gondolas at the back were for SA Recycling, a metals processor in Cookeville that recently resumed rail shipments after a 16-year hiatus, making this a significant move on the N&E.
