Who says multi-course meals are exclusive to continental or Western cuisines? Recently, several Indian chefs have begun experimenting with multi-course Indian meals, often focusing on fully vegetarian offerings. Paati Veedu (Grandmother's House) in Chennai is one such establishment that serves 5, 7, and 9-course vegetarian meals. These meals offer a traditional South Indian vegetarian feast, showcasing a range of flavors and textures. We opted for the 5-course meal with rice, which began with a refreshing Nellikai (Indian Gooseberry) Soup—a rare find on most restaurant menus. It had a unique, tangy taste, similar to a rasam or shorba.
The second course featured two crispy Masala Vadais made with Manathakkali (Black Nightshade berries) served with Milagai (Chili) Thokku and Kozhukattai paired with Puli Milagai. The vadai was perfectly crispy, with the earthy goodness of Manathakkali, and the Milagai Thokku added a spicy kick. The Kozhukattai with Puli Milagai was simply heavenly.
Next came a traditional South Indian meal, consisting of a small bowl of rice and various side dishes, including Vazhai Thandu (banana stem) Poriyal, Urulai (Potato) Varuval, and Peerkangai (Ridge Gourd) Poricha Kootu. Each side was exceptional and felt like it had been prepared with the love and care of a grandmother. The Podi Sambar and Thakkali Rasam were distinct from the typical versions found in most restaurants, offering a homely, comforting flavor—milder on spices but rich in taste.
The fourth course was a bowl of chilled curd rice, which had been refrigerated. Despite being cold, it was packed with flavor from the ginger, green chilies, mustard, and curry leaves.
For dessert, we were served two treats: Aval Payasam (flattened rice pudding) and Paruthi Paal Halwa. Both were deliciously unique—mildly sweet Aval Payasam contrasted with the rich sweetness of the Paruthi Paal Halwa.
All in all, it was a thoroughly enjoyable vegetarian multi-course meal. Priced at around ₹1100 for the 5-course option, Paati Veedu isn't exactly an everyday dining spot. As a fine-dining establishment, it offers exceptional service, ambiance, and food, making it a perfect choice for special occasions when you're craving an exquisite and memorable meal. Paati Veedu is definitely worth a try for those seeking something truly unique.
