Learning how to make 4-at-a-time Flying Geese Quilt Blocks using this no-waste method was like magic for me in my early quilting days, and I hope you love it too! Flying Geese quilt blocks are fast, fun, and a foundational quilt block for beginner quilters to learn how to make.
"Flying Geese" is a rectangular quilt block made up of a quarter square triangle and two smaller half square triangles. They come together to make a rectangle that is half as tall as it is wide, after they are sewn together. Examples of completed Flying Geese block sizes could be 1" x 2", 2" x 4", 2.5" x 5", 3" x 6", 4" x 8", and so on.
This No-Waste quilt block tutorial will make 4 Flying Geese units at one time. We will use 1 large square in whatever fabric you want the inner triangle shape (goose), and 4 smaller squares in the fabric of the outer triangle shapes (sky).
The video shows the formula to calculate how large your starting squares should be, and shows the step by step guide to make 4 flying geese from 5 squares of fabric. From cutting, to sewing, to trimming this video is perfect for making your first flying geese with ease!
