The 1976 presidential cycle featured former Georgia Gov. Jimmy Carter, the Democratic nominee, and incumbent President Gerald Ford, a Republican. The first debate featured a 90-minute discussion, focusing on domestic policy. Moderated by Edwin Newman of NBC, with questions posed by a panel of journalists, the debate took place on September 23, 1976, in Philadelphia.
