Formal Aspects of Free Verse (Ep.13-Part 1) | Exploring Its Formal Structure
Is “free verse” a misnomer? This video summarizes the major strains of free verse in English language, focusing on its metrical aspects. Drawing heavily on Chapter 7 of “Learning the Secrets of English Verse: Keys to the Treasure Chest” (Springer Texts in Education, 2022) by David J. Rothman and Susan Delaney Spear, I cover loose iambics, anaphora, syllabics, non-alliterative stress-counting, Skeltonic rhyme-driving, and sprung rhythm. Poets discussed include Walt Whitman, Marianne Moore, Robert Frost, John Skelton, Gerard Manley Hopkins, and William Carlos Williams. I then ask the question: what is the “real” distinction between free verse and formal verse?
