Travel in Tongji（Xing Tongji)：
"Xing Tongji" is a traditional folk activity with a long history in Foshan. It has a history of hundreds of years and is one of the most distinctive and influential Lantern Festival activities in Foshan.
Event time:
The traditional time for the Tongji Festival is the 16th day of the first lunar month, but in recent years the activity time has been extended. For example, the 2024 Tongji Festival will last from the 14th to the 16th day of the first lunar month.
Origin of the activity:
The origin of Xingtongji is closely related to Tongji Bridge. Tongji Bridge was built in the Ming Dynasty and is an important transportation and trade channel in Foshan. In order to pray for good business in the coming year, Foshan merchants gradually formed the custom of walking across Tongji Bridge.
Activity process and customs:
1. Marching route: Participants walk across Tongji Bridge from north to south, passing by multiple cultural attractions and stalls along the way.
2. Hand-held objects: People usually hold windmills, shake wind chimes, and carry lettuce. Windmills and wind chimes symbolize "changing luck" and "avoiding evil spirits". Lettuce is homophonic to "making money" in Cantonese, which symbolizes the influx of wealth in the new year.
3. Pray and interact: During the process, participants will silently recite “行通濟，冇閉翳”, praying to eliminate troubles and bring good luck.
