Mahakala emerges from within a flaming mass of primordial awareness, four-armed, holding objects representing different meanings according to the system of practice. The items held are commonly seen in varying combinations: the hooked knife/chopper, skull cup, trident/khatvanga, sword, coconut, bow/arrow, bone trumpet, or human heart. These four items are said to pacify sickness and obstacles, prolong life and wisdom, increase wealth, and vanquish fear, ignorance, and confusion.
It is stated in the Mahakalatantra:
“A man should practice very carefully these seven syllables and he will realize everything in the world.”
