"Colonization is part of French history, it is a crime against humanity, a true barbarity. It is part of this past that we must face." This documentary begins with this shocking phrase uttered by candidate Emmanuel Macron upon his return from a trip to Algeria in February 2017. Is this a sign that in Algeria, more than anywhere else, the past is impossible to keep at a distance? More than half a century after independence, the Algerian question remains a taboo subject in France and arouses passions as soon as it is addressed. Whatever the words, whatever the decisions, there will always be a camp that feels wronged. But how did it come to this? Why can't time erase resentment and aftereffects passed down from generation to generation? "France-Algeria: A Family Story" is a huge historical fresco, told through the prism of personal stories of exiles, activists, former soldiers and politicians (Hubert Védrine, Jean-Pierre Chevènement, Jean-Marie Le Pen) all involved in the events.

Director: Dominique Fargues and Alexis Guillot
