People frequently ask me how to get free satellite Internet. This little gadget is probably the closest thing I've seen to such a system. While it's not full two-way Internet, it does provide a constant downlink of news, sports, Wikipedia and Atlas Obscura articles, and other curated content. It's called "Othernet" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Othernet)
Unfortunately, it's only around until December of this year! The project had some good ideas, but never managed to secure stable funding or a consistent frequency on a commercial satellite feed. For now though, it is still alive and broadcasting data over Ku band to the company's SDR-based receivers.
