surprise I’m back (BEEN back) in America! I want to address my title of this video because hopefully you understand it’s just silly lil clickbait. BUT if we’re being honest, iPhone usage is one of the main differences I have really noticed between people here in the US and Europe. People in Paris and in Nice were NOT on their phones nearly as much as people are here in the US - I especially noticed people walking around on the streets and sidewalks and beaches with no phones in sight (probably just in their pockets or bags where they should be). And while we were traveling between cities there was a bigger emphasis on reading print media for entertainment - books, newspaper, magazines, etc. When we first got to Nice, I felt like an outsider being on my phone *no matter* the situation. For example, taking my phone out to wait for my coffee - it felt wrong and I felt like I was being looked at. I felt rude taking my phone out and not paying attention to what was going on around me.
I think traveling to these places made me realize how much I’m on my phone and how much other people are on their phones throughout the day here in the US. I chose this title because although it’s funny, it’s also partially true. I think it’s safe to assume when your culture values education and socialization and history and art - people will be less likely to fall victim to social media algorithm tactics which have proven to lead to many different mental and physical issues. Here in the US we DO value those things (education, culture, socialization, history, art) but not enough compared to how much we value entertainment, politics and social media.
