Todays video was inspired by Gerry, a biker we met at the first Bogan appearance in the UK in May 2022.
Gerry wasnt there for the M$B; he was just out for a ride. This was the day before Danny Hayes came and our brief interview with Gerry was completely off-the-cuff and ad hoc, which is why the camera can get a little shaky or the audio dips in and out.
I thought i'd attempt to make a video showing some of the history of this bike, its very interesting.
I've edited up some video from other sources to add some authenticity from fellow YouTubers like PETROLICIOUS, who make some awesome films.
BIKE: 1964 Honda CL72 Scrambler
ENGINE: 247cc OHC twin-cylinder, 4 speed
HORSEPOWER: 24hp
SPEED: 80mph
WEIGHT: 315lbs
FUEL CAPACITY: 2.75gal (plus 1gal in tank bag)
RANGE: 80 miles (110miles)
In 1962, American Honda sponsored a tough debut for their new CL72 Scrambler: a timed run down the 900-mile length of Baja California. Racing veterans Dave Ekins and Bill Robinson Jr began in Tijuana at midnight, riding the desolate and seldom-traveled desert trails by headlamp. John McLaughlin flew a support plane carrying Cycle World’s Joe Parkhurst and Bill Robinson Sr, leaving food and fuel at pre-mapped locations. The riders crashed a lot, got lost at night, and Bill Jr holed a piston, but they both finished, and Dave clocked in at La Paz after 39hours and 56minutes. Cycle World’s coverage of the ride inspired a spree of Baja record breaking on two and four wheels, which led to the formation of the Baja 1000 race.
I hope you stayed till the end, As always, I try to add in some interesting components here and there. People often watch a video for 2 minutes, then completely miss the more interesting parts further in. I guess I'm not a traditional storyteller; it's just the way my brain works, but hey, there will always be artistic content hidden along the way.
original shoot was with a Canon D90 and a GoPro 8 with no added Microphones :( my bad but sometimes you just have to shoot or you'll miss the opportunity, and you just cant plan out everything. However, I do keep a trusty mic and a wireless mic handy nowadays, just in case.
I hope you enjoyed seeing this little piece of History and how things all connect together. I mean Like Dave Ekins, Bud Ekins's brother is connected to Steve McQueen, the king of cool. ;) Not forgetting the contribution to Motorcycling that Bill Robinson Jr. (not the tap dancer) has made.
