This is the story of how I got to where I am today. I share my backstory of being a pre-med neuroscience major at Johns Hopkins University, and how I ultimately launched my video and social media career. I hope you can find some career advice in here!
I've loved performing ever since I was a little girl. I always wanted to go to the radio station with my dad and be on the air...I was the president of my high school's drama club...you get the deal! I also loved medicine and the human body. So you can likely understand my conundrum.
As a freshman who wanted to go down the neuroscience route at Johns Hopkins, I started taking some pre-med courses and went in with plans to become a doctor. While I was absolutely fascinated with everything I was learning, meeting people who were on the same track as I was helped me realize that we were not in this for the same reasons. This is when I began to realize that I had a skill for communications and being on camera - so I re-routed my career path. I switched my major to creative writing and started making videos!
As a freshman, I went into the admissions office and pitched a Youtube series all about Baltimore. What started as a zero-budget project with a student film & edit crew turned into a paid job on campus. Students were beginning to apply to JHU after watching these videos, and they became an admissions office staple series. It also became a massive video portfolio that I could take with me when applying for jobs.
As a junior in college, I took all of this video content and sent it over to NBC's TODAY Show. A few months later, they asked me to come to NY for an interview talking about parenting... which lead to 6-7 more live TV appearances throughout my years at college. By the time I graduated, I had built up such a solid portfolio of both my TODAY Show appearances and my YouTube videos, but I didn’t know what to do with it.
I landed my first job as a PA at Ogilvy & Mather, the advertising agency. One day, I remember getting a tripod and camera and setting up in a conference room to take stop motion pictures of a little marshmallow. It was a 9-hour project but went by in a flash! I got so excited and I posted my final video to Facebook.
Fast forward a few months, and a brand reached out to me to ask how much I would charge for a 15-second video. I finally had a side hustle!
I met a woman at Ogilvy who was the chief content officer of the company. I scheduled a meeting with her and "networked" professionally...and then (LUCKY ME!), 2 months later, this woman became the COO of Refinery29.
You all know about my years at R29, but I worked there from 2015-2019. Throughout that time, I witnessed my own social channels grow and brands starting to reach out directly to work with me. I ended up getting emails and calls from talent agencies before signing on with my current agent at UTA!
By the time I left Refinery 29, I realized that "Lucie Fink" was a lifestyle BRAND. I realized that I needed to start building my brand and actually having some recognizable graphics and branding. I began poking around the internet before finding Brightenmade. She sent me one mood board and portfolio and I was sold! Down the line, I scheduled a photoshoot with Bronson Farr and Sam Canvin...this shoot brought my shapes, colors, and graphics to life!
This was such a massive investment into myself and my brand but the result was absolutely everything I could have dreamed of and more. Introducing...Lucie Fink Media - 2.0!!! I hope you look through this website and feel joy, peace, and ease.
