The coal tipple was built in 1924 by the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad to replace the aging coaling trestle. The coal tower is used to fill locomotive tenders with coal.
After many years of disuse, the coal tipple was no longer functional. In 1992, volunteers from the Friends of the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad gathered to work on the Chama, New Mexico, coal tipple. The volunteers returned the coal tower to working order.
While it is no longer used on the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad, it is used for special events and demonstrations.
To continue our preservation work, the Friends of the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad relies on support throught membership, volunteerism, and donations. Learn how you can help: https://bit.ly/3Sdp20v
