The Métro Line M2 in Lausanne, Switzerland is 5.9 kilometres (3.7 mi) long and uses the alignment of the former Lausanne-Ouchy railway, plus a new extension towards Epalinges, crossing the whole city of Lausanne from north to south. Reconstruction work of the original "Métro Lausanne–Ouchy" (including enabling works) took around 4 years. It brought significant rebuilds of all former Métro Lausanne-Ouchy stations, reopening in autumn 2008. With a population of approximately 139,000 persons, Lausanne is one of the smallest cities in the world with a conventional Metro system!
Metro Line M2 uses Rubber Tire metro technology, which is a near-exact copy of what is used on the Paris Metro. The rolling stock is derived from the MP89-type cars used in Paris as well.
