Western superstar William Boyd returns as Hopalong Cassidy in this classic 1936 series entry and is joined by sidekick (also superstar) George “Gabby” Hayes. He’s “Windy” in the Hoppy films, and it’s easy to see why he became, and remains, so popular.
When beautiful Evelyn Brent is thrown from her horse, she is saved by Hoppy. Sparks fly before he realizes she is the saloon “hostess” and secretly the leader of a gang of outlaws! Some very nice scenes between Boyd and Brent gives this B western adult appeal.
Missing from this, the 7th Hoppy western, is sidekick Jimmy Ellison. Taking his place, for the first and only time is…Hoppy’s younger brother Buddy Cassidy played by William Janney. Actor Morris Ankrum (still billed as Stephen Morris) works for Brent. His name is “Blackie.” Ya think he’s a bad guy? Other familiar faces in HOPALONG CASSIDY RETURNS are singer Ray Whitley, Al St. John, Grant Richards, and Hank Bell.
Producer Pop Sherman liked this story so much, he remade it a couple of years later as WIDE OPEN SPACES, again with Brent as the villain. Stunningly photographed, as usual, by Archie Stout (THE QUIET MAN, FORT APACHE, THE HIGH AND THE MIGHTY) is another reason this film is one of the finest B westerns or the era. Hey, at 74 minutes, it’s also longer than most of them.
