小時候的李天祿家裡充滿矛盾，母親去世，來了一位冷酷的繼母（楊麗音飾），他跟父親（蔡振南飾）學得掌上手藝後獨自離家，隨木偶劇團登台演出、四處遊走。
年輕時的李天祿（林強飾）入贅女方家裡。後來戰爭爆發，布袋戲被禁。唱歌仔戲到邂逅麗珠（魏筱惠飾），太平洋戰爭爆發後，他加入“英美擊減催進隊”，為日本演宣傳劇，和日本人有了不錯的交情。後來李天祿一家躲避空襲疏散到南部，這過程中，他失去了親人，而第二天戰爭就告結束。

【Summary】: Introduction]: Through the early career of national treasure-level puppet show master Li Tianlu, "Dream Life" re-examines the history of Taiwan during the fifty years of Japanese occupation and the traces of Taiwanese people's common journey. As the years go by, life and death, love and hate have all entered the depths of our memories in movie shots that look like family photo albums, and have become our common history. This is Taiwan's first film script published in the form of storyboards. 100 shots present Hou Hsiao-hsien's condensed and rich film vocabulary. Puppet puppet master Li Tianlu (played by Li Tianlu) was born during the Japanese colonial rule in Taiwan. He recalled his dream life in theater through oral accounts. The story ended with Japan's defeat and surrender.
When Li Tianlu was a child, his family was full of conflicts. After his mother passed away, a cold stepmother (played by Yang Liyin) came. After learning the handcraft from his father (played by Cai Zhennan), he left home alone and performed on stage with a puppet troupe and traveled around.
When he was young, Li Tianlu (played by Lin Qiang) entered the home of his bride-in-law. Later, war broke out and puppet theater was banned. He met Lizhu (played by Wei Xiaohui) while singing opera. After the outbreak of the Pacific War, he joined the "British and American Reduction and Reduction Team", acted in propaganda plays for Japan, and developed a good relationship with the Japanese. Later, Li Tianlu's family evacuated to the south to escape the air raids. In the process, he lost his relatives, and the war ended the next day.
