Gaia GPS and OnX Backcountry are the most popular map apps for hikers and backpackers. I've been a Gaia GPS user since 2015 and have recently gotten a subscription for OnX Backcountry.
In this video I do a side by side comparison of OnX Backcountry and Gaia GPS. I test both apps while actually hiking, and then again on my computer while planning for a future hike. I tell you what I like and don't like about each app, and which one I will be sticking with.
