Welcome to our Chart Plotter 101 video. It is extremely important, for your safety, that if you are boating, especially if you are heading out into the ocean, that you understand how to read and understand a chart plotter. We us a GPSMAP on our Garmin Chartplotter and no matter what chartplotter you are using, the symbols are universal across the different companies and paper maps.
The chartplotter is essentially a marine map which is intended to aid you in navigation or boat navigation. These marine maps help you with basic navigation in the sense that they show you the water depth, depth contours, shoal locations, channel markers, rock symbols, sanctuary locations, unexploded ordnance, mooring buoys, spoil areas, breakers and all the aids to navigation are also on the marine maps located within your chart plotter.
It is important for you to understand all of these symbols to prevent you from running aground, hitting rocks and damaging the hull of the boat, and to fully understand what the aids to navigation are communicating based on their color and shape.
