ෆීල්ඩ් මාෂල් ගාර්දිහේවා සරත් චන්ද්‍රලාල් ෆොන්සේකා (උපත 17 දෙසැම්බර 1950) (සරත් ෆොන්සේකා ලෙසින් හැඳින්වෙන) RWP, RSP, VSV, USP, rcds, psc, SLSR යනු, හිටපු ශ්‍රී ලංකා යුද්ධ හමුදා නිලධාරියෙක් වන අතර 1970.02.05 වැනිදා කෙඩෙට්‌ නිලධාරියකු ලෙස ශ්‍රී ලංකා යුද හමුදාවට බැඳී 1971.06.01 වැනිදා දෙවන ලුතිනන්වරයකු ලෙස අධිකාරියට පත්වී සිංහ රෙජිමේන්තුවේ නිලධාරියකු ලෙස එක්‌වූ ජෙනරාල් සරත් ෆොන්සේකා සිංහ රෙජිමේන්තුවෙන් බිහිවූ ප්‍රථම යුද හමුදාපතිවරයා ලෙස වාර්තාවක්‌ ද තබමින් 2005.12.06 වැනිදා ශ්‍රී ලංකා යුද හමුදාවේ 18 වැනි හමුදාපතිවරයා වශයෙන් පත්විය.
ජෙනරාල් සරත් ෆොන්සේකා යුද හමුදාපති තනතුරට පත්වීම එල්.ටී.ටී.ඊ. යෙහි අවසානයේ ආරම්භක පියවර බව දැන සිටි ප්‍රභාකරන් එතැන් සිට යුද හමුදාපතිවරයා ඝාතනය කිරීමට සැලසුම් කළේය.
Field Marshal Gardihewa Sarath Chandralal Fonseka (born 17 December 1950) (alias Sarath Fonseka) RWP, RSP, VSV, USP, rcds, psc, SLSR is a former Sri Lanka Army officer who joined Sri Lanka as a cadet on 05.02.1970. General Sarath Fonseka, who joined the army on 01.06.1971 as a second lieutenant and joined as an officer of the Sinha Regiment, became the 18th Commander of the Sri Lanka Army on 06.12.2005, setting a record as the first army commander born from the Sinha Regiment.
General Sarath Fonseka's appointment as Army Commander LTTE. Prabhakaran, knowing that this was the initial step at the end, planned to kill the army commander from then on.
