ปรกติหน่วยนับเวลาที่เราใช้ประจำ จะมี ปี เดือน วัน ชั่วโมง และ นาที โดยจะเลือกใช้อะไร ขึ้นอยู่กับความระเอียดของเหตุการณ์

อย่างเช่น บันทึกสถิติโลกความเร็วการวิ่งมาราธอน ก็ต้องพูดกันในระดับวินาที เวลาความยาวช่องคนช่างสงสัยยูทูป พูดกันเป็นนาที
ค่าแรงเวลาทำงานส่วนใหญ่วัดเป็นหลักชั่วโมง พอพูดถึงเวลาทำงานแล้ว ช่วงเวลาที่เราทำงานที่ใดที่หนึ่ง เราก็พูดกันเป็นหลักปี อย่างเช่นระยะเวลาการดำรงตำแหน่งของรัฐบาล เราก็ใช้หน่วยปีในการวัด
หรือการวัดความแตกต่างยุคสมัยของสังคม เราก็ พูดกันที่ หน่วย ทศวรรษ เช่น ยุค 90 ยุค 2000 เป็นต้น

จะเห็นว่า การจะเลือกใช้หน่วยวัดเวลาอะไรนั้น ขึ้นอยู่กับว่าเรากำลังวัดเหตุการณ์ที่มีความละเอียดแค่ไหน

แต่ถ้าจะเล่าถึงยุคสมัยต่าง ๆ ของโลก ที่มีอายุกว่า 4.5 พันล้านปี เราจะใช้ หน่วย วัน เดือน ปี แบบที่เราคุ้นเคย คงไม่ค่อยเหมาะสมนัก เราเลยมีหน่วยวัดเวลา อีกระบบหนึ่ง ที่ใช้สำหรับ แยกยุคต่าง ๆ ของโลก
โดยเราเรียกหน่วยนี้ว่า geologic time scale (GTS) หรือที่ภาษาไทยเรียกว่า ธรณีกาล
