On February 15, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz sharply criticized U.S. Vice President JD Vance's recent attack on Europe's stance toward hate speech and the far right. Scholz made it clear that it’s not for others to tell Germany or Europe how to handle such matters.
The controversy began at the Munich Security Conference, where Vance accused European leaders of censoring free speech, targeting German political parties for their strong opposition to the far-right AfD.
The AfD, a party known for its anti-immigration views, is polling at about 20% as Germany heads toward its February 23 general election. Scholz remarked sarcastically on Vance’s speech, pointing out that while the conference was expected to focus on the Ukraine-Russia war, Vance barely mentioned the topic, instead choosing to focus on domestic European politics.
In another development, Scholz forecasted that the next German government would create an exemption to the country's constitutional debt limits, specifically for defense and security spending. He expressed confidence that the upcoming election results would lead to these adjustments, easing the restrictions of Germany's "debt brake" policy.
